Book blast for From the Ashes by Daisy Harris

Today I'm participating in a 1-day virtual super book blast tour for From the Ashes by Daisy Harris. The book is a contemporary M/M romance book available today from Samhain Publishing.

Daisy will be awarding a $20 gift card to Starbucks to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so leave a comment below to be entered for a chance to win. And if you'd like to increase your chances of winning, visit other tour stops and leave comments there, too.

Blurb:
When an accident burns down Jesse’s apartment, he’s left broke and homeless, with a giant dog and a college schedule he can’t afford to maintain. And no family who’s willing to take him in.

Lucky for him, a sexy fireman offers him a place to stay. The drawback? The fireman’s big Latino family lives next door, and they don’t know their son is gay.

Tomas’s parents made their way in America with hard work and by accepting help when it was offered, so he won’t let Jesse drop out of school just so he can afford a place to live. Besides, Jesse’s the perfect roommate—funny, sweet and breathtakingly cute. He climbs into Tomas’s bed and tugs at his heart. Until Jesse starts pushing for more.

Their passion enflames their bodies but threatens to crush Tomas’s family. Tomas is willing to fight for Jesse, but after losing everything, Jesse isn’t sure he can bear to risk his one remaining possession—his heart.

Warning: Contains an angry older brother, judgmental best friends, a slobbering bull mastiff, and enough red-hot gay loving to make a porn star blush.

Excerpt:
The gay guys Tomas hooked up with never seemed to find what he did to them demeaning, but he’d been raised to believe it was.

That was fine when it came to hookups at strange bars in the city, but the kid curled up on his couch watching television wasn’t like those guys. He was sweet and had had a tough time. He didn’t deserve to be treated the way Tomas treated men, even if Jesse thought that’s what he wanted.

By the time he pushed open the door from his bedroom into the living room, Jesse had twisted into the fetal position on the couch, and fallen asleep.

“Jess?” Tomas touched his arm, trying to shake him awake. He needed to get Jesse off the couch long enough to unfold it into a bed.

“Hmm?” Jesse flopped onto his other side, almost falling off in the process.

Tomas shook his head. “All right.” He went to the other side of the loveseat and worked his arms under Jesse’s knees and shoulders. “Up you go.” He lifted.

Waking up, Jesse wrapped his arms around Tomas’s neck.

He smelled like soap from Tomas’s shower, overlaid on the scent of ashes. Jesse pressed a kiss into his shoulder.

“You can take my bed tonight,” Tomas whispered. He tried to ignore the throbbing in his belly and the urge to set Jesse down and lie on top of him.

When he laid Jesse on the bed, Jesse didn’t let go. “I could be rocking your world right now,” Jesse breathed in his ear.

Soundlessly, Tomas gasped. He couldn’t leave the circle of Jesse’s arms. Jesse was stronger than he realized, and in that moment, Tomas was far too weak.

Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn't sure if she writes erotica. Her romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris's dismay the sex tends to get completely out of hand.

She writes about fantastical creatures and about young men getting their freak on, and she's never missed an episode of The Walking Dead.

Interview with historical romance author Holly Bush

I have a quick-hitting interview with historical romance author Holly Bush today as she tours her novel Cross the Ocean.

Holly will be giving away one $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card to a lucky commenter during the tour. To be entered to win, use the form below. To increase your chances of winning, visit other tour stops and enter to win there, too.

Bio:
Holly Bush was born in western Pennsylvania to two avid readers. There was not a room in her home that did not hold a full bookcase. She worked in the hospitality industry, owning a restaurant for twenty years and recently worked as the sales and marketing director in the hospitality/tourism industry and is credited with building traffic to capacity for a local farm tour, bringing guests from twenty-two states, booked two years out.  Holly has been a marketing consultant to start-up businesses and has done public speaking on the subject.

Holly has been writing all of her life and is a voracious reader of a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction, particularly political and historical works. She has written four romance novels, all set in the U.S. West in the mid 1800’s. She frequently attends writing conferences, and has always been a member of a writer’s group.

Holly is a gardener, a news junkie, has been an active member of her local library board and loves to spend time near the ocean. She is the proud mother of two daughters and the wife of a man more than a few years her junior.

Blurb for Crossing the Ocean.
1871 . . . Worlds collide when American Suffragette, Gertrude Finch, and titled Brit Blake Sanders meet in an explosive encounter that may forever bind them together. Gertrude Finch escorts a young relative to London and encounters the stuffy Duke of Wexford at his worst. Cross the Ocean is the story of an undesired, yet undeniable attraction that takes Blake and Gertrude across an ocean and into each other’s arms.

Excerpt from Crossing the Ocean.
Blake went to the stables, had his horse saddled, and rode to Anthony’s estate. Maybe Elizabeth will ask me to stay for dinner, he thought. Then she’ll go to bed, and Anthony and I can drink a bottle of brandy and get stewed. He could stay there if he couldn’t ride home. A room was kept ready for him with a fresh change of clothes. Blake smiled and felt better than he had in days.

As the butler escorted Blake down the hall of Anthony’s home to the drawing room, he heard a loud but feminine . . . snort and Elizabeth’s trill laughter in reply. Damn. He remembered now. A cousin of Elizabeth’s from America, sent as an escort to another cousin, was staying with them. Anthony had described and dreaded the arrival of Cousin Gertrude with horror. A spinster remotely connected to Elizabeth’s father’s side, she was big, bold and here for a month. Her arrival had curtailed Anthony’s visits.

Blake stopped and hissed at the butler. “Think I’ve changed my mind, Jenkins. I don’t want to disturb their company.”

“Quite the coward are we, Your Grace? Leave your life-long friend alone with this Amazon from America.” Jenkins stared as he spoke. “In any case they saw you ride up the drive.”

Jenkins spoke his mind to all including Anthony and Elizabeth. There’d be no expecting servile behavior for him. “I’m sure you did not miss the opportunity to point out my arrival,” Blake said.

“Of course not, Your Grace.” The butler opened the drawing room doors with a flourish. “The Duke of Wexford.”

“Blake,” Anthony said and jumped to pump Blake’s hand. “I am so very happy you are here.”

Blake watched the woman sitting beside Elizabeth stand, and walk across the room to him. She was every inch as tall as he, and Anthony made the introductions. She held out her hand. Blake grasped it and bent to place a kiss there and was surprised when she began to shake it, hitting him squarely in the nose. Blake covered his face with his hand.

“Oh, dear,” Miss Gertrude Finch exclaimed. She threw a look at her cousin Elizabeth.

Welcome, Holly. What is the first book you remember making an indelible impression on you?
One of the first novels I read that had significant impression on me was Agnes Sligh Turnbull’s The Rolling Years. It was the first time I was lost, literally lost, in a story, and especially as it was set in the 1850s. I’d never read a historical novel before. I was mesmerized. Another one I read early that I vividly remember was Christy by Catherine Marshall about the young teacher in the Smoky Mountains at the turn of the twentieth century.

If you could only eat one food the rest of your life, what would it be?
Steak. I like them all. I like t-bones and strip steaks and chopped steak. I’m a carnivore from way back.

If you were a shifter, what animal would you like to be?
I’m not sure what a shifter is, but I’m guessing it’s a person that can become an animal. So if I get to choose an animal to be it would be a cat. My cats live like queens.

Favorite season? Why?
I love fall. I don’t know whether it’s the smell of the leaves or my intense love affair with sweaters, but Iate September to mid-November is my favorite. Although, I love spring, too, when the crocus are pushing up through snow and daffodils are blooming. Hmmm. It’s a toss-up.

Best movie ever made?
Ang Lee’s 1995 depiction of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility is my all-time favorite. From the music to the casting to the costumes to the script. The acting was superb as was the cinematography. Is there a more nuanced depiction of love and love’s foes, money and power, ever told? Emma Thompson’s screenplay triumphs.

What are some ways readers can connect with you or find out more about your writing?
I'm on Twitter: @hollybushbooks

Thanks, Holly. Happy touring!

Book blast for How to Get Good Reviews on Amazon by Theo Rogers

This is just 1 of 50 virtual book blast stops, all happening today, for How to Get Good Reviews on Amazon: A Guide for Independent Authors and Sellers by Theo Rogers.

There’s a $100 Amazon gift card giveaway to a lucky commentor. Use the form below to enter for a chance to win. And to increase your chances of winning, visit other tour stops today and enter there.

Blurb:
How To Get Good Reviews On Amazon is a simple, no-nonsense guide that teaches exactly what it says it does. Based on both psychological science and thousands of hours of conversation with some of Amazon’s top reviewers, it takes you behind the scenes into the reviewing subculture that has grown up on Amazon’s website. It gives you a deep, insider’s knowledge of how the top reviewers think and operate. It not only shows you what to do: it takes you inside the reviewers’ heads so that you can see for yourself both how these techniques work and why they’re so effective.

Lessons include:

·         A simple, four-part formula for writing emails that get your work reviewed.
·         Three things never to say when communicating with reviewers!
·         How to pick reviewers who are more likely to give you a good review.
·         How to reduce the chance that a reviewer you contact will post a bad review – even if it turns out they don’t like your work!
·         How people get caught out when receiving reviews from friends and family.

This book teaches an honest, straightforward approach that works. It works because it’s not based gimmicks or tricks but on a real understanding of how Amazon reviewers operate: most of all on what they expect from authors and other sellers. If you want to know how to talk to Amazon reviewers in a way that will make them respect you as a professional and see you as the kind of seller they actually want to help, this is the book for you.

Excerpt:
Sellers do quite often turn up on forums on Amazon, specifically asking for reviews. Unfortunately, a while ago Amazon changed its policies to expressly forbid this sort of behavior in all forums but one: the Meet Our Authors forum. The trouble with this is that the Meet Our Authors forum is very largely just a bunch of authors spamming each other. Very few seem to have any real interest in what the others are saying.

Despite Amazon’s rule against using its forums for self promotion, people still do it. And in practice the reception that authors and other sellers get when they post on any of the multitude of forums does vary. To some degree it depends on how the author or seller handles themselves.

The other thing you should always be extremely careful about is paying close attention to the codes of behavior considered appropriate among the forum regulars. Different forums have different levels of tolerance for authors or other sellers seeking reviews, or otherwise promoting themselves. For example, the Romance forum has a reputation as a place you should absolutely never leave this kind of post – unless you actually want to be ripped to shreds. Indeed, the Romance forum has developed a reputation as an extremely hostile place for authors in general. So it is important to do your homework on the specific forum you’re considering using.

Author information:
Theo Rogers combines years of coalface experience on Amazon's website with formal training and qualifications in a range of business and social science disciplines. He's spent literally thousands of hours talking with Amazon reviewers, getting inside their heads, and learning what makes them tick. He's spent almost as many hours observing the carnage that so often takes place on Amazon's forums. In the process he's developed a deep insider's knowledge of the reviewing subculture that's grown up on Amazon's website.

He's also seen a lot of authors and other would-be sellers make the same mistakes in their dealings with that subculture - over and over again.

As a result of his experiences, Theo has come to believe that yes, there is a simple formula that works: a way of dealing with reviewers that's honest, powerful, and extremely effective at winning reviewers over, getting them on your side, and making them actually want to help you.

Interview with crime thriller author Gregory Delaurentis

Today is a virtual book tour stop for Gregory Delaurentis and his novel Cover of Darkness.

Gregory will be giving away a $50 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card to a lucky commentor. You can enter for a chance to win through the form below. To increase your chances of winning, visit other tour stops and enter there, too.

Blurb about Cover of Darkness:
A high profile murder of a Wall Street executive in Westchester pits three people against the criminal underbelly of Manhattan nightlife. The key players are two ex-cops turned private investigators—Kevin Whitehouse, whose sharpest tool is his keen analytical mind, and David Allerton, a former Special Forces operative—and Margaret Alexander, Kevin’s lover. In their search for a killer, they are forced to travel to the edge of sanity and morality, while stumbling onto their own confusing secrets as well. The Cover of Darkness is a gritty noir saga that untangles a web of deceit in the course of tracking down a brutal murderer.

Excerpt from Cover of Darkness:
David first opened the door to a closet on the left, searching it with the gun muzzle, before approaching the door at the end of the hall and kicking it open. An angry, naked man stood on the other side, his anger changing to fear in seconds once he beheld the gun pointing in his direction.

“Get back into bed,” David ordered.

The pale-bodied man responded as he staggered backward. The foot of the bed struck the back of his knees, sending him seated on the mattress. The woman on the bed had by this time covered herself with the sheets, and curled her legs up.

While Kevin stood nervously in the doorway, David searched the room and the closets, the muzzle of the shotgun again serving as a probe, but found no one.

“What the…?” Chase asked David.

After searching through the room, David tossed the shotgun to Kevin.

Suddenly, Chase went white-hot heat, crawling backward into the arms of his woman in sheer panic screaming, “What do you want?!”

“I want information,” David demanded, going to the foot of the bed, standing before them with Kevin directly behind him. “I want to know who whacked Osterman.”

“How am I to know?!” Chase shouted back. His hair was a wild tangle, his eyes wide as saucers with fright.

“Don’t yell at me,” David said calmly. “I want answers. I’m not interested in killing you.”

“You bust into my crib and start throwing guns around. You’re crazy, man, what do you think I’m thinking?”

“You were moving dope for Osterman,” David persisted, ignoring Chase’s remarks.

“Osterman! He jerked me.”

“With the Colombians.”

“Damn right.”

“And you didn’t like that.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“So, you had one of your soul brothers do him in.”

“Oh hell, no. My people don’t kill. We don’t mess with weapons like you do.”

“And the reason for that?”

“More jail time . . . What are you? A cop?”

“Don’t worry about what I am,” David growled back. “You are moving weight. I want to know what happened after Osterman jerked you.”

“He jerked me. That’s all.”

“That’s all? You didn’t go to the Colombians? Liar!”

“Yes, yes, I did that!” Chase corrected. “I went to the Colombians as soon as I knew he jerked me. I begged them to give me another chance. They said they would, if I replaced their one hundred kilos. One hundred kilos! How do I do that?”

“Put bullets into Osterman for revenge.”

“How is that going to get me my one hundred kilos?”

“Let me explain it to you, genius. The Colombians trust Osterman enough to give him a heavy shipment. You find it, whack him, and take his shipment back to the Colombians. Paid in full.”
Chase thought that over for a second or two. “But that’s not what happened.”

“Convince me otherwise.”

The word “Freeze!” were suddenly heard from the doorway. David frowned as he glanced over his shoulder to see a scruffy looking black male, armed with his own shotgun.

Author information:
Gregory Delaurentis spent his adult life roaming from job to job, working for Lockheed in California, various law firms in New York, and financial firms on Wall Street. Throughout this period of time, he was writing—unceasingly—finally producing a large body of work, albeit unrecognized and unpublished . . . until now. Cover of Darkness is the first in a series of upcoming books that include Edge of Darkness, Pale of Darkness, and Cries of Darkness.

These novels follow the lives of three individuals who do battle bringing criminals to justice, while they struggle to understand the complex relationships that exist among themselves. This intriguing trio has absorbed the attention of Mr. Delaurentis for the past year and a half, so much so he decided to self-publish their stories to bring them to a wider audience.

What are four things you can’t live without?
One, my laptop; two, my diabetic gear; three, my Playstation 3; and four, my Galaxy Note II smartphone. I think I can survive anything with just the above. I might switch my terabyte drives for the Playstation 3 if they are not counted with the laptop. I have a lot on those things.

What is the sweetest thing someone has done for you?
When I was just married, I worked as night security, and the guards would gather before a large television set and play with a Playstation 2. It was infinitely fun, and I found myself addicted. I couldn’t wait to get to work to get my hands on a controller and spend the night, not thwarting crime but instead playing this game and that.

One night, on a weekend that I didn’t have work, I went over to my brother-in-law’s home for a dinner party and while there he showed me his new Playstation 2 and I was so excited for him. I sat down with him and showed him how to use it, but more than that I played with it as much as I could. Suddenly the party surrounded me, and I honestly thought they were interested in my skill at playing the game, but my brother-in-law turned to me and stated that it was my game.

My wife had bought it for me. I was both awestruck and swept away on a tidal wave of joy. I jumped up and hugged and kissed her tenderly, thanking her for my gift. It was the most wonderful thing that anyone had ever done for me, and the most thoughtful.

If you could be any character, from any literary work, who would you choose to be? Why?
That would be Sheriff Brody from the book Jaws by Peter Benchley. I felt he had the most idyllic life that I had ever encountered. He lived in a modest home in Amityville Long Island in a beachfront community. It was a small town where everyone knew everyone—you know, the fishbowl effect. He had a wonderful sexy wife and obedient, well as obedient as young people can be, children. In the mornings he would make a thermos of coffee, his wife would make a bag lunch and he would hop into a jeep and drive to the town precinct, greeting everyone he passed. Once at work he would greet his half-witted but honest hearted deputies and then oversaw the simple, petty squabbles of the townsfolk. At the end of the day he most likely sat back in his chair in his office with his feet on his desk, watching as the sun settled on the flat ocean horizon.

How would you spend ten thousand bucks?
I would spend ten thousand bucks quite quickly in fact. I love computer applications, peripherals, gadgets, games, and books. I buy them to an overabundance now and given the opportunity I think I would buy a third laptop, more monitors, another cable internet connection, more terabyte hard drives, better computer speakers and then go app cruising for the neatest, coolest applications I could find. Yeah, I guess you can imagine already that I’m a geek.

What are 5 things within touching distance?
Easy, a 21 inch HD computer monitor, my 17 inch laptop, two terabyte drives, and my cable box.

Blurb:
What rules would you break for the one you love? What lies would you tell?

Three weeks before their wedding day, Nicola and Greg discover that they may have the same mother.

They met when Greg joined the San Francisco newspaper where Nicola is the travel editor. After six months, eager to start a life together and raise a family, they decide to marry.

When Nicola finally meets his family in Seattle, and mentions the circumstances of her adoption, Greg’s horrified mother is forced to reveal the shameful secret she has kept for 36 years.

As they struggle to deal with her revelation, their relationship is challenged and strained. If his mother’s suspicions are true, they will be forced into a devastating choice: break all of society’s rules and fight for their love, or break their hearts and give each other up.

It will be the greatest test their newfound love has faced – and their love may not survive.

Excerpt:
Scene:  Nicola and her friend Hélène talk about what constitutes a family.

“Families are funny, when you think about it,” mused Hélène.

“Why? Apart from the well known fact that you can’t choose them.”

“That is what I mean. I was thinking of you,” explained Hélène. “You were chosen. Gwen and Arthur and Bill and Alison are your family, but not due to luck or circumstance.”

Nicola nodded, drowsy but puzzled. “So?”

“Would you ever have sex with Bill?”

Nicola bolted upright, wide awake. “No! Ewww, no! How can you ask such a thing?”

“This is my point. There is no shred of shared DNA between you, but he is your brother and you react with quite proper revulsion to the idea of sex with him. Yet if it happens that you and Greg do share DNA, it is expected that you should have that same reaction, despite the fact that you met only six months ago and you in no way regard him as your brother.” Hélène swirled the cognac, warming it in her hand. “Why is Bill your family, but Greg not? That is what I was getting at when I said families are funny.”

“Nurture over nature,” proclaimed Nicola suddenly.

Hélène said, “I do not understand. The words, yes, but not the meaning.”

“It’s one of the few things I remember from my first-year psychology class. The debate about which is more important in determining how a person turns out – his genes, or his upbringing. In this case, I think of Bill, totally unrelated to me, as my brother because that’s how I was brought up to think of him.”

Hélène nodded. “I see. And by the same reasoning, you do not see Greg that way. Your genes did not recognize each other.”
