Interview with romantic suspense author Jesse Pearle

Today's hot seat is occupied by romantic suspense author Jesse Pearle. She's touring her newest novel, Second Skin, with Goddess Fish Promotions.

Jesse will be awarding a $25 Amazon gift card to two randomly drawn winners. To be entered for a chance to win, use the form below. To increase your chances of winning, feel free to visit other tour stops and enter there, too.

Bio:
Jesse Pearle grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina in a place where there was no danger in dancing naked in the moonlight at the top of a mountain. Always possessed of a creative mind, but never quite the right amount of focus, she wandered for decades. She received a degree in fine art which she put to poor use working an uneventful desk job for an engineering company when she started writing her first really ambitious piece of fiction. She lives in sunny Southern California with her ever supportive husband and four attention-whoring cats.

Welcome, Jesse. Please tell us about your current release.
Second Skin is part love story and part coming-of-age story. It’s a love triangle, and there are three main characters. Pilar Flores is the daughter of a drug lord, eighteen at the beginning of the story and trying to find her place in her father’s business. Leo Reyes is one of her father’s employees and the leader of an LA street gang who becomes her father’s right hand later in the story. Sam Blanco is a boy in the neighborhood Leo’s gang holds dominion over, whose goal is to make enough money selling tattoos after high school to get the hell out of dodge and away from his abusive father. The three characters’ worlds collide in unexpected ways, from Pilar’s first encounter with the tragic hero, Leo, to the complicated entanglements that occur when the young tattoo artist, Sam, comes into the picture. While the love story is most definitely between Pilar and Leo, every love story has its obstacles to overcome. Sam is one of those obstacles for Pilar and Leo, but in truth he may be the catalyst that allows the two lovers to understand each other more.

At its heart, it is Sam’s story, even though the “happily ever after” isn’t his. At least not yet.

What inspired you to write this book?
I wrote a fan fiction back in 2012 that needed a fresh, original character to play a small role—the role of a rough and world-weary tattoo artist approaching his 50s. The character sprang to life so vividly in my mind at the time that I just had to know what his life story was, so I began writing it. The teen-aged Sam came first, then the other characters gradually began to evolve out of my imagining of the story of this young artist who aspires to be a famous tattoo artist like his idol. Sam’s little sister, Celie, came next, followed by Pilar and Leo, then Benny, then the rest of the cast of characters came to life, one by one. They each told me their stories as they evolved.

My plan for the Second Skin series follows Sam through significant milestones in his life, every event shaping him into that older, wiser, but still rough around the edges and incredibly sexy man.

Excerpt:
(Leo’s POV)

The small plane touched down on the runway of the airfield outside Los Angeles. After taxiing to the hangar, Leo powered down the engines and pulled off his headset. He felt like a weight had been lifted, but anxiety twisted in his gut as he worked through his explanation to the old man.

Gustavo had needed to be taken care of, that fact had been clear to him for months. The only reason he hadn’t gone to Arturo Flores about Gustavo’s consistent series of fuckups was because of his promise to Pilar to leave her father out of it.

The deed was done, the memory of the corpse he’d left behind in the little shack in the Sonoran desert still left him ice cold to his core. He’d had to ignore the spark of memory of another pair of eyes whose light the same gun had extinguished two years earlier. Two years to the day, he thought.

Leo no longer regretted any of those bullets, starting with the very first one from his brother’s gun that had pierced his own chest. Each had brought him closer to her. Now all he had to do was claim what was his.

The phone at his hip buzzed as he made his way across the tarmac to the parking lot. He settled in his car and started the engine, turning the AC on full blast while he checked his messages.

911! Call me when you land!

It was from Pilar. Goosebumps rose up on his arms in spite of the hot August air that baked the interior of his car.

What exciting story are you working on next?
I have too many projects to count at the moment! I have a series of paranormal erotica novellas in progress that are written under a separate pen name to protect the innocent (or guilty?). These novellas feature dragon shapeshifters and their human lovers.

I am also planning a short series of romantic suspense novels with a tough female protagonist dead set on revenge against a man who wronged her. During her quest for vengeance, she develops a deep connection with a man who works for her, and it grows into an intense love affair neither party expected. All they were after was a casual fling, but it turns into love. Who’d’a thought? There are tattoos involved in that story, too… (you might be noticing a trend here).

And, of course, the sequel to Second Skin is in progress, along with the rest of that series. I am planning five books for the series, each one exploring a different segment of Sam’s life and his ties to his past that somehow keep haunting him even from thousands of miles away. He’s met a new woman, but will she be his happily ever after?

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I’ve been writing my whole life, though not to the degree that it monopolizes my waking hours. It wasn’t until November 2011 that it really hit me that writing was my true passion and something I needed as much as I need air to breathe.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I do write full-time. My work day is a lot of struggling to avoid the internet and stay on track. I actually turn off my wi-fi if I’m on a deadline (which I set for myself) and I use a Pomodoro timer to segment my work time vs break time. I have 25 minutes of concentrated writing followed by a 5 minute break. Every two hours I take a longer break to eat/exercise/clean house or whatever else needs doing. Before I wrote full time I tried to squeeze writing in wherever I could, which was generally after work and late into the night. I can’t say I get more sleep now than I did when I had a full-time day job.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I like adding Easter eggs in my writing. In particular, I like to include a dragon somewhere in every story, even in my non-dragon related stories. I’m just a little bit gay for dragons. There’s one in Second Skin, as well as each of the following books in the series. I don’t always manage to find a good spot for it in my shorter stuff, but I try.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an architect, but once I got to college I completely lost focus. I even dropped out, once I found the internet (this was the early 90s, too… so my internet options were limited to chat rooms. Read into that what you will). It took me seven years and three college transfers before I finally graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (summa cum laude, even… who knows how I acomplished that!) and I still had no idea what I really wanted to do.

Now I finally know at the ripe age of 41 and it’s incredibly liberating!

Second Skin is a pretty steamy story as it is, but if anyone’s interested in steamier (and shorter) stuff, there are links to my alter-ego on my website’s main menu. I also have several Pinterest collections that I add to when I find inspiration and I love getting new pin recommendations!

Interview with YA paranormal author Bethany Harar

Today I’m featuring YA paranormal novelist Bethany Harar as she tours her newest novel, Voices of the Sea.

Ways to connect with Beth include her website, blog, and Twitter pages.

As part of her virtual book tour, Bethany will award a copy of Voices of the Sea to a lucky commenter of this blog. So, to be entered for a chance to win, leave a comment below! And if you'd like other chances to win 'stuff', feel free to visit the Fresh News Daily blog for other contests.

Bio:
Bethany Masone Harar grew up in a family with “gypsy feet” who moved from place to place until eventually settling down in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. As a teacher and writer of young-adult fiction, Bethany is able to connect with the very audience for whom she writes and does her best to turn reluctant readers into voracious, book-reading nerds. You can visit her website at www.bethanymasoneharar.com.

Welcome, Bethany. Please tell us about your current release.
Voices of the Sea is a young adult novel which brings mythology and our modern world together. In my book, Sirens exist, but have remained hidden for centuries to protect themselves against a vicious cult who wants them dead. Seventeen-year-old Loralei is the future guardian of her clan, and never took the threat seriously, until now. The cult, known as the Sons of Orpheus, has found them and Loralei must find a way to protect her people without revealing their existence. Voices of the Sea is a book about survival, love and family. But ultimately, it’s about one young woman who must put aside her childhood and make difficult decisions to save the people she loves.

What inspired you to write this book?
I came up with the idea when I had a dream about a woman who was wading in the ocean. In my dream, I knew she was communicating with the sea. I happened to be teaching The Odyssey to my ninth graders at the time, and put the two together. I’d been searching for an original idea for a new book, and was so excited when everything fell into place.

Excerpt:
“At the water’s edge, she pictured her mother. All around Lora, her mother’s spirit danced in the ocean, swirled in the salt air, surrounded her, and filled her with the power she’d been lacking. It swelled within her, starting at the tips of her toes and pulsing through her body like a detonator, threatening to bring her to the breaking point. Lora’s body quivered, and she pictured a massive swell, higher than the gentle waves of Pacific Grove.

Moving forward, her toes touched the ocean. She could feel the electricity flowing from her body into the water, a cosmic pulse moving magically into the sea. She could see the ripple effect as a giant wave moved away from the shore into the water, then back again, creating a large current, taller than even she had imagined. Closing her eyes, Lora willed it to crash at her feet and then dissipate, and the water listened. The ocean obeyed her. For the first time, she had power over the sea.”

What exciting story are you working on next?
My newest book is a YA, paranormal thriller. I hesitate to say too much, because it is still in the beginning stages, but it deals with raw teenage struggles and what happens when adults tell them they need to let go of their problems and “lighten up”. Let’s just say that their problems are very real, and only get worse as a result.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
This is a hard question to answer. Sometimes I still doubt my abilities enough to wonder if I really AM a writer. But I think after I wrote my second novel (which is not published), I began to believe I was a writer. In any event, as I wrote Voices of the Sea, I started to realize that it had the potential to be published, and at that point I knew I was a writer, even if my confidence was still lacking.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
Unfortunately, I do not have the luxury of being a full-time writer. I teach eleventh grade English at my local high school, and also serve as senior class sponsor. Generally, I get up at 4:45 a.m., get to school by 6:00 a.m., and get work done for an hour before the students arrive at 7:15. I teach until 3:15, and then leave to pick up my children from school. My “mommy” job begins at that point, and ends when they go to bed. Finally, around 8:30, I have time to write. Sometimes all I finish is a paragraph. Other days, I’ll get a whole chapter completed. Either way, I write and consider it a win. Weekends allow more writing time, but it is never guaranteed. I write when I can, and take what I can get.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I get cold when I write. I can’t explain it, but my feet particularly get very cold, so I end up wearing warm socks and a hooded sweatshirt even in the summer!

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was really little, I wanted to be a movie star. Their lives always looked so glamorous, and I was sure I would be the best. When I was a teenager, I wanted to own my own bookstore, and buy and sell rare books. I imagined myself traveling Europe, and working with interesting book collectors. However, I’m pretty happy with being an author and a teacher.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
There is so much pressure in this question! Okay. I like poodles and hate spoons. I routinely watch Sponge Bob, sometimes by myself, and have watched the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice more times than I can count on two hands. My students might tell you that I’m a hard grader, but do my best to make class interesting and humorous. My current favorite TV shows are Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Bones, True Blood, Falling Skies and Under the Dome. My former favorite TV shows are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, X-Files, The Sopranos, How I Met Your Mother, Seinfeld and Survivor. I think Italians are lovely and I do not prefer heights. And I just got back from a seventeen-day trip to London and Scotland with my mother.

Is that enough?

That’s all fabulous, thanks, Beth!

Book excerpt for Tesla's Imprint by Kimberly Adkins

Blurb:
Some things just can’t be erased.

Simon’s visions of a little girl are the only memories he has. Like an imprint on his heart, the visions cling. Who is she? Who is he for that matter? Tracked and hunted across the world, and in possession of a device that sets him apart from time and space, danger follows him at each turn.

He never meant to drag Tess into his drama. But with one slow, seductive dance in a candlelit nightclub, that’s exactly what he’s done.

Tesla’s own heritage is a mystery in itself. Born of wealth into a corporation with no paper trail, she’s called back to take the helm. But what’s the nature of the business she’s supposed to lead? And how does it connect her to Simon?

Excerpt:
She was so close to him, her confidential whisper hot against his cheek. He could feel the satin sleeves of her robe brush against the back of his hands as he held her fingers possessively. He believed her – every word. God help his soul if he was wrong, but he didn’t care. He would tell her his only secret.

“We both must have been here as children. I think I remember you,” Simon said in the same hushed tones she used. “We played together on the lawn. You laughed at me, always teasing. Do you remember me too?”

Tess froze in his arms the moment the confession left his mouth. Her eyes looked stunned and then panicked before she pulled away. He wasn’t able to gauge her emotions as she let her hair fall over her face to cover her reaction. He felt more helpless than he did the first day he woke at the hospital with amnesia. Even if he wanted to take his secret back, he couldn’t. Was his revelation so horrible that it could cost him the small amount of trust he thought he’d built with her?

“Tess, just look at me.” He lifted her chin with his fingers, taking the chance he wouldn’t spook her with such a bold move.

Please let the bond I felt with her at the start mean something, Simon thought. She leveled her chin and there was resolution in her eyes. He could feel her strength and determination and it was damn sexy.

Interview with historical romance author Samantha Garman

Samantha Garman currently lives and writes in Brooklyn, NY. She loves Scotch, a great conversation with anyone willing to speak their mind and flannel pajamas. While yearning for a backyard and a dog, she's decided to stay busy working on her next book, Dandelion Dreams.

Samantha is joining the blog today with an interview and a blurb and excerpt for her newest historical romance novel, Secrets of a Heart.

During her virtual book tour, Samantha will be awarding a lucky person a $50 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card. To be entered for a chance to win, use the form below. To increase your chances of winning, feel free to visit her other tour stops and enter there, too!

First, let's have some fun Q&A with Samantha.

Any weird things you do when you’re alone?
Aside from talking to myself?

What is your favorite quote and why?
Sitting up all night would be pointless if somebody you loved wasn't sitting up with you, picking out music to play and helping you kill the bourbon. Walking by yourself in the rain is for college kids who think loneliness makes poets.” –Peter S. Beagle.  Can’t say why it’s my favorite, only that it stuck with me when I read it. Also, I like any quote that talks about bourbon.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Phish Food

Which mythological creature are you most like?
My friends think I’m a little woodland creature and they call me Samling. Whatever that is. A nymph?

What are four things you can’t live without?
My e-reader. Black tea. Sunshine. My husband.

Thanks, Samantha. Now let's talk about Secrets of a Heart. Please tell us a little bit.
London, 1815. At the age of nineteen, Blaine Whitmore loses everything dear to him in a brutal assault on his family line. Left with nothing, he finds himself aboard a merchant ship sailing far from home. Years pass as a boy becomes a man, and yet no amount of time or distance will help Blaine forget all that he has lost. After ten years sailing the high seas, he is finally ready to restore the Whitmore name.

Felicity Canton is as lovely as she is penniless, and has been left to care for her three sisters while attempting to maintain a crumbling estate. With no hope for escape from her predicament, she is resigned to a peasant’s fate. She never anticipates attracting the attention of her wealthy and mysterious new neighbor, nor does she expect him to be her savior.

As Blaine searches for truth and doles out vengeance, he becomes increasingly captivated and distracted by Felicity’s beauty and inner strength. Does he dare confide in her the secrets of his heart? Will his future be as bleak as his past, or will he finally have a chance at happiness?

Excerpt from Secrets of a Heart:
The sound of a snapping twig turned her attention, and the object of her thoughts stood a few feet from her, leaning against a huge tree with gnarled roots as if he had all the time in the world.

“I thought I managed to escape without anyone seeing me,” she said in lieu of formal greeting.

“I saw you leave just as my carriage was pulling into your driveway,” he explained. “Why are you here alone?”

“Mr. Fletcher is giving a grand tour of our home to strangers, in hopes that they buy it.” Her tone was acerbic.

His gaze softened, but she thrust out her chin, daring him to offer her sympathy. She changed the subject, unable to dwell on the idea that her childhood home, one that had been in the family for generations, would be sold. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”

“So proper?” Gray asked, moving away from the tree and coming toward her.

“I feel out of sorts today.”

Gray reached out to touch her cheek. “I came to hand deliver an invitation to the masquerade.”

“Oh.” Her brown eyes dropped to his lips. Moving closer, he wrapped his arms around her. “Is this your way of trying to distract me from my woes?” she asked with a smile.

“Is it working?”

“Too soon to tell,” she replied wickedly.

Book excerpt for Betraying Mercy by Amber Lin

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Amber will be awarding a $10 gift card to Amazon to a randomly drawn winner. To be entered for a chance to win, use the form below. Please click the banner to visit other stops on this tour.

Can she be more than a mistress?

With a tarnished reputation, Mercy Lyndhurst expected to become the Earl of Rochford's mistress, not his wife. Immediately abandoned by her husband after their wedding, Mercy transformed herself from commoner to countess, vowing to protect the lands and people her husband was forced to leave.

Over the past six years, William has restored the family fortune all the while tortured by his memories of Mercy…and the dark night he killed a man. When a threat draws him home, William learns just how much has changed—including his wife. While the passion still flares between them, he fears he has wounded her too badly to regain her trust. But as the danger grows they must unite to save the estate…and possibly their marriage.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

Unlike the night six years ago, Gerald opened the door. The old butler looked shockingly unchanged, as dignified and austere as ever, but William had seen the brief flash of surprise in his eyes, and joy.

Here was his childhood nemesis and his old best friend. William blinked, caught in the memories, but this was real. Not everything changed; not everyone had died. He hadn’t left a wife to fend for herself in a strange household.

“Lord William!” Gerald said, then caught himself. “My apologies, sir. Lord Rochford.”

William ducked his head, humbled by the rare show of discomposure. If William had been born of a different class, he could have embraced the man who raised him. “Hello, Gerald.”

An odd light in his eyes, Gerald examined William from scruffy head to scuffed boots. He lifted an eyebrow. “We weren’t expecting you, sir.”

Just like that, William was both chastised and absolved for the years of his absence. “Wrote me off for dead, I’m sure.”

“You’re too strong for that, my lord.”

William sucked in a breath, thinking of his family. They hadn’t been strong, they’d been fragile. He’d failed his entire family, and Mercy worst of all. “Where is the countess?”

“In the breakfast room, but—”

“What? Is she sick?”

Gerald raised his eyebrow, surprised. “No, my lord. She’s…different.”

Different, that was some explanation. And grave danger another. No one wanted to tell him what the hell was going on, so he’d have to see for himself. He probably looked like a wild animal right now, disheveled from travel and feral in his tiredness. He ought to make himself presentable, if he still remembered how, but he had to see that she was safe.

And maybe also how she was different.

His boot struck a discordant note on the floorboard as he entered the breakfast room. He stopped and stared at the picture of domestic elegance, as colorful as a painting and as foreign as a fairy tale.

The words caught in his throat. What’s wrong? Are you hurt? And then, when he had at least ascertained visually her relative safety, Did you think of me every night, as well?

Mercy, the Countess of Rochford, his wife, took a sip of coffee, her gaze glued to the book she held. Her black tresses coiled upward into an elaborate coiffure. A pale gold dress clasped her slim form and a collar of cream pearls graced her neck.

On her finger, the emerald ring he’d given her on that night sparkled innocently. His grandfather had given it to him. A strange gift to a young boy, but he’d hoarded it all the years since his death. Until that night. His one piece of wealth in the world, and he’d given it to her.

She looked every inch the lady. Well, she was one. A countess after all, but in every memory, every fantasy, he had seen the young waif. He had imagined her roaming the shadowed halls, like a ghost, but the woman in front of him was so very physical. Flesh he wanted to touch and blood he longed to heat. Desires so long repressed bubbled to the surface. Her beauty made him harden, but her elegance made his heart hurt.

“Don’t sulk, Owen,” she said, her eyes still on her book. “If you have something to say, then spit it—” When she looked up, her mouth froze in a pink little O that made his body come awake.

She looked at him, then at his clothes. His dingy garb suited a vagrant more than the captain of a ship, much less an earl. Her gaze returned to his face, lingering on the scar across his cheek, a souvenir from his first year at sea.

Well, let her look. She had grown into a beauty, whereas he had always been a monster. Now he looked the part. Would she condemn him right away? Would she tell him to leave? She should—no one knew better than her what he was capable of, and already he was undone.

Her mouth snapped shut and tightened. Anger? Fear? He wasn’t sure he could bear the last, but he wouldn’t have to, because her eyes were cool, like the ocean blackened by night. She wasn’t scared; that was him.

She inclined her head. “My lord.”

Had she fallen into hysterics, he would have known what to do. He could have tried to comfort her or order her to stop. That was all he had seen of marriage, but civility was nowhere inside him.

Yet he found himself straightening and offering a slight bow, the strings of his upbringing propping him into place. “My lady.”

Excerpt:
At one in the morning, the dark sky was illuminated by a full moon as they drove on a country road, trees hanging overhead like skeletal arms, nearly touching their vehicle. Driving slowly, they made periodic stops, for only the perfect place would do.

Approaching a bridge over a deep ravine with a wide creek, the van stopped. Both got out and circled to the back of the white utility van, where they pulled out a young woman's body, already stiffening with rigor mortis. They carried her to the edge of the road, where they set down her corpse, gave it a push, and sent it rolling down the ravine until it landed on the rocky creek bed below. Hands on hips, they waited and watched the body at rest, as if they expected it to magically come to life and run away.

"I wonder how long it will take the cops to find this one." The driver chuckled as he followed his passenger to the back of the van.

"Good question. The one last winter wasn't found until the spring thaw." He flipped through a stack of magnetic business signs he'd collected in the back of the vehicle. Choosing one, he slapped it on the side of the van and climbed inside.

"So how many magnetic signs do we have now?"

"Fifteen or so. We've got signs for plumbing, locksmithing, house painting, and general repair businesses. Think we need more?"

"No." He shook his head. "You did a good job stealing those. Even if we have an eye witness tonight, they'll describe a business truck, complete with a name and phone number the cops will use to try to track down their suspects. Too bad it will be a dead end. Any time we can toy with the cops is a good time."

"Agreed," he said, as a slow, evil smile spread across his handsome face.

Devan Roth glanced at his twin brother, Evan, sitting in the passenger seat, and thought about how much Evan craved his praise. He'd used that need to his advantage their entire lives. It wasn't that Devan didn't love his twin. He did, but he loved manipulating him more. Although Evan had a higher intelligence level than Devan ever dreamed of reaching, Evan's adoration for his twin was his weak spot. And if there was anything that Devan could identify from a mile away, it was someone else's weakness. That's what made Devan the leader.

From early childhood, he could get Evan to do absolutely anything he wanted. Devan invented the "Double Dare" game when the twins were twelve; he double-dared Evan to jump off the second-story roof. Evan leaped, and broke both his legs. But he never told their parents that Devan had dared him to do it. His loyalty to his twin outweighed the pain he suffered that summer.

The Double Dare game continued. Early on, they stole and killed their neighbors' pets, and then moved on to peeping in windows in the neighborhood and videotaping the event so they could relive the thrill later. Now they were abducting and killing prostitutes, then disposing of their bodies in remote areas surrounding Indianapolis.

Blurb:
Ronnie has the job any entry-level angel or demon would sell their soul for—she's a retrieval analyst for the largest search engine in the world. Ubiquity is a joint initiative between heaven and hell. Because what better way to track all of humanity's secrets, both good and bad, than direct access to their web browsing habits.

She might appreciate the position a little more if a) she could remember anything about her life before she started working at Ubiquity, b) the damn voice in her head would just shut up already, and c) her boss wasn't a complete dickhead.

As she searches for solutions to the first two issues, and hopes the third will work itself out in performance reviews, she uncovers more petty backstabbing than an episode of Real Housewives, and a conspiracy as old as Lucifer's descent from heaven. On top of all that, if she forgets the cover sheet on her TPS report one more time, she's absolutely going on final written warning.

Now Ronnie’s struggling to keep her sanity and job, while stopping the voice in her head from stealing her life. She almost misses the boredom of data analysis at Ubiquity. Almost.

Excerpt:
Gabriel shut off the engine, calling after Michael, “Closest town is almost forty miles away.”

“I've got time,” Michael replied without glancing back.

Footsteps scrambled on the dirt, and a few seconds later Gabriel fell into step next to him. Dust climbed the legs of Gabriel's slacks, mingling with the khaki. “We need to talk.”

Michael shook his head. “Nope.” It wasn't that he didn't like Gabriel. Or rather … no, he just didn’t like Gabriel. He was nice enough. He was efficient at his job. But Michael had never gotten over the storms of fire and brimstone he'd used to make a name for himself back in the day. Every angel had their specific job, and way back when, a lot of them had thought graphic and rampant genocide was the best teacher. Gabriel had wiped out entire civilizations without a second thought.

There were times when Michael swore the movies had it wrong. It wouldn’t be computers or robots who destroyed humanity ‘for their own good.’ It would be a misguided angel. Probably not a demon though. Lucifer tolerated far more ‘creative learning’—also known as ‘poke it with a stick, and see what you learn.’

“We have a problem,” Gabriel said.

He was still there? Michael didn't look at him. “No. I have problems. You have problems. We don't have problems.”

“Lucifer has a new pet.” The last two words fell between them, landing in unsettled dust.
