Author bio:
Terri J. Haynes, a native Baltimorean, is a homeschool mom, writer, prolific knitter, freelance graphic artist and former Army wife (left the Army, not the husband). She loves to read, so much that when she was in elementary school, she masterminded a plan to be locked in a public library armed with only a flashlight to read all the books and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. As she grew, her love for writing grew as she tried her hand at poetry, articles, speeches and fiction. She is storyteller at heart. Her passion is to draw readers in the story world she has created and to bring laughter and joy to their lives.

Terri is a 2010 American Christian Fiction Writers Genesis contest finalist, and a 2012 semi-finalist. She is also a 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarterfinalist. Her publishing credits include Cup of Comfort for Military Families, Crosswalk.com, the Secret Place Devotional, Urbanfaith.com, Vista Devotional, and Publisher’s Weekly.

Terri holds a Bachelor's Degree in Theology, a Master's degree in Theological Studies and a certificate in creative writing and graphic design, meeting the minimal requirements of being a geek. She and her husband pastor a church where she serves as executive pastor and worship leader. Terri lives in Maryland with her three wonderful children and her husband, who often beg her not to kill of their favorite characters.

Interview with Christian novelist Ian Dexter Palmer

I'm wrapping the week up with an interview with Christian novelist Ian Palmer. We're focused on his newest book, a teenage redemption story called Weed and Water.

Bio:
Originally from Australia, Ian lives in the high desert in his beloved Southwest USA. As a petroleum engineer, recently retired, he consulted all over the world. When he hikes with them or watches them play sports, Ian’s grandchildren are a particular source of happiness. His main interests are hiking, dancing, writing, and stimulating conversation. Ian regularly writes a new blog on various topics relating to Christian faith, and has also written a book called Hiking Toward Heaven.

Welcome, Ian. Please tell us about your current release.
Weed and Water is about a teen athlete called Ethan who goes down because of shame which leads to sex and drugs. As well as hurting himself, the boy brings heartbreak to his single mom who is doing her best. A mysterious stranger called Jackson, who is more than he appears to be, challenges Ethan about his choices, and offers a way out. But Ethan continues to yo-yo, unsure of who or what he can trust. The story, which is set in the desert Southwest and in the rivers and lakes of the Midwest, rocks and rolls with tension and geographical adventure.

What inspired you to write this book?
I have a granddaughter who is 16, and a grandson who is 13. They are in the challenging years, so I chose to write about the lure of sex and drugs (call it Weed). These kids also know about faith in God (call it Water). I wanted to write about the tension within many teenagers as they slosh, like seaweed in the ocean, back and forth between the Weed and the Water.

What exciting story are you working on next?
I am creating a new book called Nerd in a Blue Leather Jacket. This is about receiving insights and wisdom from God. I pull up examples from my own private life as well as my nerdy career, and also incidents told me by other people. It’s very cool to look back on tipping points in life, to see the hand of God behind these.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Many years ago I wrote a book called Unleash Your Creative Mind, but never published it. However the research for this book based on the intuitive right brain and the analytical left brain, became a tremendous guide for the rest of my life, both private and career.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
Apart from writing, my interests are hiking, dancing, and playing pickleball. My goal is to write half of each day, like Ian Fleming did in Jamaica while he created James Bond. I recently lost three months after my home flooded.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
After starting a book or a blog, ideas and connections come to me out of the blue….in the shower, in the car, on the dance floor. Wherever I am I always try to jot down a note, so I won’t forget them.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an ornithologist (bird-studier). I was a dedicated builder of bird-cages and a breeder of canaries and zebra finches and budgerigars.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
When I was 21 and socially backward, I observed that all women love to dance, and if I could just learn to dance I would be in. So I bought a book and taught myself to dance holding a pillow and following footprints in the book. I was right…..women wanted to dance with me, and this led to dates, and changed my whole social life.

Thanks, Ian!

Interview with inspirational author Rhana A. Gittens

Welcome, Readers. I’m happy to introduce you to today’s guest, Rhana Gittens. She’s here chatting about her new inspirational, Christian book Perfectly Loved: Knowing Love on God’s Terms. Today is the start of a short mini-tour she is doing with Write Now Literary Virtual Blog Tours.

Bio:
Rhana A. Gittens has a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Masters of Business Administration from the University of Florida. She has a minor certificate in African-American studies and is an accomplished writing tutor. She was born in Queens, NY, raised in Lauderdale Lakes, FL and currently resides in Atlanta, GA.

Welcome, Rhana. Please tell us about your current release.
Perfectly Loved is one of those books that forces you to not just read it, but to apply it. It forces you to reflect on your own love story with people and with God and determine where you stand in perfect love. At the end of every chapter there is a personal testimony from people across the US sharing how God’s love transformed them. Each chapter also includes personal questions for the reader to reflect on. When reading this book you can’t help but get closer to God and remind yourself of His love for you. It will encourage you to step out of your fears, go after your purpose and bring others with you along the way.

What inspired you to write this book?
This book was birthed from a struggle. I was feeling broken by love and asking, begging, and pleading for God to help me understand what real love is. He did. I have always kept a journal. So as I was learning more about God’s love, seeing the love He has given me, and appreciating the relationships of love that I have, I wrote it all down. After about two journal entries I immediately knew I was going to write a book and I finally understood the purpose of my story and my life.

What exciting project are you working on next?
I am currently writing a guided journal to help people delve further into their thoughts about themselves, their purpose, their story, and love. After Perfectly Loved was released I received lots of messages of people asking about their own lives, purposes, and how they could share their own stories. The guided journal is practical in helping people receive the revelation of God’s love for them and their purpose on their own and with their own life story as the guide.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I started writing after reading “Go Ask Alice” in the 4th grade. I loved that the anonymous writer of this book had kept a diary and because of her diary she was able to build a story that she could share. I have kept a journal since I was in the 4TH grade. I didn’t think I was a writer back then. I just considered myself a girl with a diary. It wasn’t until college that God started really leading me into writing as a purpose, career goal for life. My original major in college was Physiology and Kinesiology. After the first semester, I changed my major to journalism and the rest is history. It’s one of the best decisions I ever made.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I currently work in project management. It’s a fulltime career. I enjoy it, but I enjoy writing so much as well. It is as if writing always finds away to be a part of my life. I tutor in writing part-time and now I am an author that wants to author more books. Sometimes I feel like God is stretching time so that I can get it all done. I write on the weekends and dedicate myself to completing 5 hours of writing a week. It’s difficult and takes lots of discipline because sometimes I want to just go to Sunday brunch. But I am grateful that of this current experience of balancing corporate America with writing. I’m not sure how that may change in the future, but I am excited about the current.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Some of my very best ideas come in the car. I live in Atlanta and spend about 2.5 hours in my car a day. I get a lot of good thinking in my car. I promise my car knows more about me than people do.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher. I played “school” up until the 6th grade. I had imaginary students and lessons. It was my favorite thing to do when I came home. Ms. Gittens came out right after a bowl of ice cream, and right before Full House came on.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?

Thank you, Rhana!

Interview with self-help writer Nekesa Ouma-Namulu

My special guest today is writer Nekesa Ouma-Namulu. She’s talking about her new self-help book, The Michelangelo Effect: Keys To Extraordinary Success For Ordinary People.

Bio:
Nekesa Ouma-Namulu describes herself as a 'true citizen of the world,' having the privilege of calling many places home. She was born and brought up in Nairobi, the capital of that picturesque nation on Africa's eastern coast, and moved to London where marriage and career made Europe her second home for almost two decades. Her career as a Computer Networking Systems consultant, which included a year with Cisco Systems, saw her spend many happy hours in data centres all over the world, fiddling with fibre-optic cables plugged to huge data switches alight with dozens of different blinking lights. Work saw her set up camp in Mexico City, Seoul and most recently Paris, which led her to conclude, "no-one does a strike quite so thoroughly as the French." Nekesa has published a computing book, which sits happily next to others in UK libraries, as well as a children's fable. Today, Nekesa and her family split time between homes in Kenya, Spain and the UK.

Welcome Nekesa. Please tell us about your current release.

This book's mandate is simple. To tell a simple truth:

"Whatever your present difficulty, your brain can find a way out of it."

No-one is really taught how to use their brain. Most people think of it as a mechanical automaton they have no control over. Indeed, most are amazed that this underrated organ can be mastered to perform the near-miraculous in their lives. Rote-learning at school and pre-packaged 'information' have dulled this magnificent asset, resulting in defeated, miserable lives. We've got to a point where we don't even dare to hope for better.

The book examines the single common denominator behind the new wave of personal success stories sweeping across the globe. Slum millionaires, uneducated patent princesses, Third World Forbes shortlisters, village entrepreneurs and activists with a global impact, billionaire composers (who cannot read music)...‘unattractive’ folk finding amazing life-partners, people who previously lacked confidence finding, meeting and keeping friends...these people do not seem to be at the mercy of employers, clients, market forces, looks, economic meltdowns, politicians, house prices or interest rates, personal or global history, geographic location, age, weight, [fill in your personal challenge], whatever. They are clueless about motivational workshops and all self-help staples, have never heard of The Law of Attraction, never paid for a wealth creation seminar, and don’t bother to look any different what they always have. They are from all backgrounds and every ‘demographic,’ with every known disadvantage bafflingly represented.

It is my hope that by the end of the book, the reader gets to understand the true nature of success, and how they can effect their own real and lasting personal transformation. That is the promise I dare to make at the start of the book:

"Whatever your current difficulty, there is a science to it. A science that explains exactly how you ended up where you are. There is a pattern to your inability to pay bills, live where you want to, find love or use your talents to your benefit. A mesmerising storyteller has pulled a pretty screen across the entire mess, shielding it from view. It is my hope that this book pushes that curtain so far back that you are never again pulled by anyone's strings but your own".

What inspired you to write this book?
The idea for this book started to develop some time back, I'd say about ten years ago, when I still lived in London. Around that time, almost by accident, I started to mentor acquaintances on how to launch careers in what was then the very lucrative Computer Networking Systems industry I worked in. A pattern began to emerge. With no change in actual circumstances, they, including some who'd been totally unable to get work, even with good qualifications, all started to ace entry exams and interviews, wow employers and go on to do spectacularly well in their new careers. The shift worked just as well with those in other careers, and its effects extended to other areas of their lives. These people were becoming successful. Yet, nothing tangible about them had changed. Nothing but their thinking. Not just positive thinking; this was a fundamental deep-from-the-roots complete overhaul of the way they worked their brains. This book is a distillation of the method that changed their thinking, and therefore their lives, as well as mine.

Excerpt:
The idea that you need to purge something horrible from within you to be okay is a cruel, cruel lie. There is a huge difference between recognising personal responsibility and assigning personal FAULT. Responsibility calls us to take action while looking for faults takes us down the destructive road of self-loathing, with its attendant purging, self-flagellation, and deep misery with NO resolution of the problem we are trying to resolve.

Blaming entire communities for the ills of society also does not work. To believe that a single group of people, loosely defined by some easily recognisable attribute, can be responsible for ALL of society's problems is a delusion that takes us back to the witch-hunting craze of the 16th and 17th centuries. Recognising and identifying individual perpetrators of specific offences regardless of arbitrary characteristics works better, simply because it's closer to the truth.

Like the villagers who believed they had to be rid of something amongst themselves to solve their problem, today we find ourselves constantly directed to find fault with ourselves instead of looking about us to find the real cause of our difficulties. I'm not advocating a culture of blaming everyone for your problems. That would be a mistake. But if you are not the cause of your problems, it is also a mistake to blame yourself. Of course we all have emotional bumps and bruises collected along the way. But we must remember that we were built for an imperfect world. Wounds heal; our delicate brains are encased in bone. Someone knew we'd be in for a rough ride. It is NORMAL to have dents, both physical and emotional. That something happened to you DOES NOT mean you are damaged goods or flawed. It just means you are a citizen of this world where some god-awful stuff sometimes happens.

So if the self-loathing that you've cultivated has got you absolutely nowhere, perhaps it's time to consider the possibility that there's nothing wrong with you after all, and begin the real work of finding what's really going on in order to remedy it. For good.

What exciting story are you working on next?
I'm working on the Kindle version of a children's fable I wrote some years back called "The Eternal Dreamer." This is a project that is very close to my heart. It uses a dream to explore ideas of divinity and our place in the world. I was very lucky to work with some of our best contemporary artists. The artwork I was allowed to use in the book is breathtaking.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
It feels like I have always been at it. I remember submitting a story to a children's writing competition as a child, and later, as a teenager, sending essays to a national newspaper, one of which was quite astonishingly, published! My first 'real' book however is a computing manual that was published in London. I still get a thrill when I see it on shelves in public libraries in the UK.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
By day, I am a technical consultant specialising in computer networking systems. What that means is that I spend a lot of time fiddling with routers, data switches and fibre optic cable in data network centres all over the world. It can be very demanding so I deliberately took time off to write this book.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I use two different laptops to write...at the same time.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A pilot!

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
I am touched by the phenomenal response I am getting from readers all over the world. I'd like us to start a narrative around the themes discussed in the book, and have started a blog at my website to this end. I'd love to hear from them!

Interview with Christian non-fiction author Karen Adams

Karen Adams is here today talking about her memoir, Trying to Outrun the Love of God.

How can God reach someone who appears unreachable? Will the love of God be enough to break every chain and loose the trap of the enemy? In her debut book, Author Karen Adams struggles to understand how a loving God would allow life to be so unbearable. Facing childhood molestation, years of crack addiction, nervous breakdowns, and admissions to mental wards, she learned that no matter how difficult life was, God continued to extend His love. Trying to Outrun the Love of God, is a deeply moving story of one woman’s journey filled with suffering and pain, but one that ultimately finds wholeness and deliverance in the arms of a loving Savior. A must read for all those who think they are alone.

Bio:
Karen Adams is an evangelist who teaches and preaches on the transforming love of God. Having survived childhood sexual molestation, drug addiction, and mental illness that landed her twice in the mental ward of hospitals, she has a burning desire to bring hope to the hurting.

Welcome, Karen. Please tell us about your book.
It is my journey from childhood molestation, four nervous breakdowns, and crack addiction. I stress how God’s love made the difference in my life no matter how hard I tried to run from him.

What inspired you to write this book?
The need for others to be encouraged.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
I work as a Patient Financial Associate at a large hospital. I found time to write after work and on my days off. I read an awful lot.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A teacher.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Be encouraged and know no matter how hard your past and even today may be, God can and will make something beautiful out of your life.

Thanks, Karen. Readers, you can find Karen's other tour stops here.

Interview with self-help, spirituality, and humor author Sally Naylor

Revised Banner (1)

book cover
I have an interview today with educator, counselor, and poet, Sally Naylor as she celebrates the release of her second book Rogue Nirvana -- Beyond Woo-Woo: Create the Life You Love. If you’ve ever wondered if this is all there is or wondered what’s missing in your life’s journey, this book offers a comedic yet laser-focused excursion into how societal norms, self-help, and new age spirituality do not often offer you relief. After battles with chronic fatigue, cancer, and widowhood, Naylor sought, synthesize, and now shares in this field guide, her belief that you too can construct your own personal Nirvana.

About the Author
sally naylor1
Sally Naylor, daughter of a highly decorated WWII combat veteran, FBI agent, and lawyer, and a sweet, stay-at-home, religious, southern belle mother, roamed the world growing up as an “Air Force Brat”. This gypsy was raised with and confused by both the sword and the cross. A series of crises later in life: chronic fatigue, widowhood, breast cancer, in addition to a new love affair, motivated her to engage in this rogue romp to Nirvana as she sorts through the impossible expectations of her conventional middle class upbringing.

And yes, she did attain her own Nirvana but in an unexpected & bizarre manner. Before she set aside societal conditioning and its inherent promise of Nirvana, Naylor negotiated and ultimately thrived as an independent school English teacher and curriculum developer. Naylor’s students have had their work featured in many publications and have won numerous writing awards. In addition to teaching creative writing she served as an in-school counselor where she initiated student peer-to-peer counseling, mediation and AIDS Ed training programs. As a creative writing teacher and blogger she shares her expertise on her own aptly named web site: Writing Rogue. She also enjoys life coaching, speaking, and facilitating workshops.

Welcome, Sally. Please tell us about your current release.
Naylor’s insightful eye for the absurd and her keen sense of humor explore the detours, dead ends, and fallacies on the road to nirvana.

Breaking new literary ground, Naylor combines poetry and prose as she weaves a story of the paradoxes and frustrations that the imperatives of family, religion, the educational establishment, and society proffer: the myth that if you only “try harder” or “are good,” Nirvana awaits.

Tag along on Sally Naylor’s double-pronged journey into both new age spirituality and the mandates of conventional wisdom. Through her laser focus and deeply insightful humor, you’ll discover where you fit on the Woo-Woo to skeptic’s continuum. Whatever your position, this book will touch you, all of you: from the conventional to the seeker, from the artist to the pragmatist, whether bleeding heart, cynic, Pollyanna or atheist; rest assured, the inspiration for your own Nirvana lies within this book.

What inspired you to write this book?
I wanted some fun and to share my experience with others, for at what point in your own life did you realize that the teachings of your family, school, religion and community will not guarantee the Nirvana they promised for following the rules. At what point did you realize that if you are to attain your Nirvana it will be a do-it-yourself project?

What exciting story are you working on next?
Next high priority is a book titled The Estrogen Paradox, then two poetry books, a creative writing text and a pragmatic series of collaborative essays detailing processes that clear emotional and mental density which the author developed with five partners titled, Rogue’s Release.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
About seven but I didn’t get serious til I was 47.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?
My writing, editing & coach projects constitute full time work, but my hours vary. I avoid routines. Writing finds me, like breathing. It’s virtually reflexive.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
My love of the quirky and desire to showcase and revel in it.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
The wife of a judge, politician or professor. Hate to admit it, but there it is.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?
Rogue Nirvana and Firebird are both available on Amazon, Check out review on Kirkus.

Thanks for being here today, Sally!

I want. I want you to want me. I want you to think I am the smartest, the thinnest, the most beautiful. I want you to want to be me. I want to be enviable. I want to be impervious. I want to need nothing. I want you to know that I am strong. I want to think I am better than everyone else. I want.

Excerpt:
“The Flight”

“You will never see me again!” I screamed. I knew I was running out of time as we approached the airport.

“I’ll die there! I’m never coming home.”

“Abby, stop. You are getting yourself all worked up and we have to go inside now.” My father parked the car in the dismal parking garage. Ignoring my residual choking on tears, he got out of the car and began to extract the suitcases, careful not to get any dirt on his jeans.

Daddy always looked sharp, one more thing I hated about myself. In the last several years I had become more of a skeleton freak show than an attractive daughter he could be proud of. My face was gaunt and haggard and wore the look of an aging smoker. My breasts were flat and my waist curve-less, like a prepubescent boy. I wore sea-foam green sweat pants with the word “SPIRIT” in block letters down my right leg. The sweats hung around my thighs like a tent missing poles, but I liked them because I felt small inside them. A sloppy white t-shirt blaring “SPIRIT” as well, topped the ensemble.

“Abby, get out of the car.”

I debated for a moment, but knew that I’d never win. The wildest of my tantrums were no match for Dad’s strength, but until now, at least in the battle of wills, I had triumphed. Two days prior my parents played their trump card.

“We’ve tried everything.” My parents had me cornered in their bedroom. Mom spoke because I listened more calmly to her. “We’ve been patient while you’ve promised over and over to try. We are really, really worried about you.”

Mom’s voice broke there. Dad turned and glared at my little sisters eavesdropping from the bedroom doorway. Two sets of chocolate brown eyes and one blue pair ducked back into the hallway. Then he shut the door and stepped forward.

“You promised to gain ten pounds in two months.” Dad’s voice was taut. The six-foot-four man that I once thought invincible slouched beneath a heavy burden. “Over a month ago, you agreed to the ultimatum that you would gain eight pounds. You’re nowhere near that. You need help and this is not a discussion. Remuda Ranch agreed to admit you, and we need to be there the day after tomorrow.” Daddy turned and left the room.

I slumped to my knees on the floor. “Please, please, please, Mom! Don’t send me away. I can’t be gone for two months. You might as well disown me. I’ll die there!”
