Interview with YA paranormal fantasy author Marnie Cate

And to wrap up the week, I have another YA fantasy paranormal romance book to share with you. Today’s is by author Marnie Cate and the title is Exigency (Protectors of the Elemental Magic Book 2).

Bio:

Marnie Cate is a writer of coming of age and urban fantasy novels. Born in an Irish mining town in Montana, she always had a a flair for the dramatic and a vivid imagination, and spent her childhood lost in the elaborate worlds she created with the help of her dolls.

After co-piloting the dreams of someone else for 15 years, Marnie Cate was struck by a powerful image in her mind. This seed created the world of Starten and the complicated world of goddesses and their touch on the mortal world.

Inspired by the actress Dame Judi Dench, she pursued her dream of sharing the stories that were brewing in her mind. With the urging of friends and family, she wrote in every spare moment she had.

After countless weekends spent at the local coffee shop typing away and people watching, Marnie finished her first novel, Remember: Protectors of the Elemental Magic. With the world of elemental magic and the humans they lived in released, the stories have just begun.

Welcome, Marnie. Please tell us about your current release.

Exigency is the second book the Protectors of the Elemental Magic series. Mara Stone's world was shaken, but she is a fighter. Facing new adversaries, Mara is learning what it truly means to protect the magic. As she starts to rebuild her life, the web of her family's secrets continues to unravel. Mara is forced to face her fear of losing everything she holds dear. 

What inspired you to write this book?

The character of Mara Stone has endlessly filled my mind. There are so many question unanswered that the first book could not cover. I am excited to learn more about this magical world as it comes to life.

Excerpt from Exigency:

“Stop trying to fill my head with your nonsense. Hurting them will not help my family. You are not real. Go away!” I screamed, sending out the magic I had inside me. Fire, water and air swirled around me as the earth below me shook.

Laughing the voice said, “That is exactly what I wanted to see. Now take all of that emotion and go up the mountain to rain down your anger on the Drygens. But, this time put a little force behind it.”

Lashing out at the reflection, I screamed, “Go away! Go away! Go away!”

Covering my ears with my hands, I closed my eyes tightly and began to rock myself as I pleaded for the voice to leave me. Strong hands gripped my shoulders. Struggling to pull myself away from the danger, I pulled too hard and landed with a splash in Sparrow Lake.

The cold water shocked me and I found it hard to catch my breath. Unable to see what had attacked me, I began to scramble to the shore with thoughts of running back to the forest to hide. I wasn't fast enough. A hand roughly caught my wrist. My instinct to run away instantly changed to self-preservation. My heart began to beat so hard I thought it would fly out of my chest and my mind kept telling me to survive. Fight! Fight! As I turned to confront the danger, I found myself face-to-face with Cole.

What exciting story are you working on next?

I am so excited to say that I am working on the third book in the series. The Light and Dark have been introduced and name it is time for Mara to be introduced to the balance.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I think it didn't really sink in until I published my first book. I thought I was a storyteller but hearing back from readers on how much they loved the story or even how they are made at a character makes my day.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?

I do have a full-time job as a records specialist. I write before work and after work when inspiration strikes.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I like to record my story and then transcribe it later. While I am commuting to work, I love to act out the character's conversations.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I was a product of the 70s. I dreamed of becoming a Solid Gold Dancer. Who didn't love their flashy costumes and leg warmers.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?

I am an avid fan of Dame Judi Dench and through her I have become a huge fan of Britcoms.
