Interview with romance novelist Adrienne Davenport

Romance novelist Adrienne Davenport is here today talking about her novel Stranger by Morning.

Welcome, Adrienne. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Greetings,

My name is Adrienne Davenport. I am an author of historical and contemporary romance, as can be seen be my recent works. I have spent most of my life in Moab, Utah. This is where I currently live with my son, Julian who is the driving force behind my passion for writing. Though I have been writing since I was about one, I didn’t really push at my goal until he was born, five years ago. Since that time I have continuously moved forward, slowly moving forward with my work. 

When I am not writing, I can often be found reveling in one of Moab’s many advantages such as bike riding or climbing. Or you might simply find me enjoying the area’s beautiful scenery, most times with my wonderful son. Please tell us about your current release.

Stranger By Morning is the story of a female reporter named Reese Donavon and the jewel thief who she is currently tracking. Their story takes them through various countries such as India, and Venice. All of which could be considered gorgeous and exotic locations. Along the way Reese struggles, not only to keep track of the reason for her adventure, but to lose a grasp on her ever slipping heart as well. Even so, she begins to learn more about her colorful childhood, and discover that there is more to the story she is after then she originally thought there was.

What inspired you to write this book?

Most of my ideas come to me long before I ever transform them into books. Like most of the others, Stranger By Morning struck me months before I ever began its construction. Often times this happens at the most precarious of times, such as at night, just as I enter the bathroom. As a result, I keep a notebook near me at almost all times. I can’t put a finger on exactly what my true inspiration was. Like most, it just sort of hit me. I suppose the one solid thing about the whole process was I wanted to write a contemporary rather than a historical romance, so I could prove to my readers that I had far more to offer. Besides that, as I said above, I have to really go with the flow.

What exciting story are you working on next?

Recently I began work on another historical, Risky Invitations set in England, London. It is based around two figures who acted as minor characters in my first historical. Their personal story however describes the stimulation it personally had to offer. Currently, I am working on minor details regarding Stranger By Morning. I will resume work on Risky Invitations in approximately a month. I’ll have to be honest, I am thoroughly looking forward to it. For periodic updates check my personal website.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I’d say in about first grade, if not a little sooner. I didn’t always write novels mind you. I began writing poetry, which I continued for many years. This I did, for the most part, for fun. Only when my son was born did I once again start to consider writing as a professional. Though I always wanted to do so, having my son was the extra little push I needed to get going. It was the only nudge I needed, as a result.

Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like?  If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write?

Currently I am a stay at home mom. I balance my time between my son and my writing, working one around the other. I don’t know whether or not you would consider that full-time writing, it is as close as you get, I suppose. During a normal day, I spend a lot of my time with my son but when I’m not with him I can be found staring down the line with my computer working on something to do with a novel. It’s the only way to make any progress. So far it seems to have worked.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

That’s easy, I probably have two actually. I like to tap my finger when I’m editing and I tend to speak out loud, especially when I’m going over the thesaurus. I didn’t realize until much later, but this is how my son first learned to speak. The way I looked at the fact, at least it served two purposes.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Simple, I have always dreamed of becoming a writer or an architect. I have wanted to be a writer for years. It just took me a long time to figure out how exactly to go about it. As for architecture, I guess it speaks for itself. I just hold out that the knowledge itself will one day come in handy. One never knows.
